This year, floods inundated 8+ states affecting millions, causing huge infrastructural, agricultural and livelihood devastation. Multiple floods in many states still remain largely affected and people are still grappling for the basics. Our work in flood-affected areas has intensified even when the peak phase of disaster is over. Our teams on the flood affected areas shares some insights.
“After 15 dreadful days, we are now hearing such laughter in our school..Children look happy.” says Mr. Kaajhi a, teacher at a school in Aare village of Kolhapur, one of the worst flood affected districts of Maharashtra.
The recent floods here were a hard blow for the people here, particularly children, who seeing devastation up close was in sheer panic and was traumatized. Goonj joined hands in re-opening the local school after the floods and engaged kids in fun activities. The kids jumped, regaled and played their hearts out after a long stressful period. Each kid received “School Kits” for their efforts
Like wise in Karnataka, Goonj local team recently visited flood affected areas in Mudhol in Bagalkot, Karnataka. These pictures from them show massive infrastructural devastation, water logging and crop damage. The floods that devastated Belgaum, Bagalkot and Kodagu in Karnataka a few weeks ago left many concrete structures also completely damaged. In Karnataka, we will be working in Belgayi, Kodagu and Bagalkot districts – some of the worst flood affected areas, with flood hit families. Beyond reaching relief material our focus will also be on assessing their urgent needs, rehabilitation and livelihood revival.
