The severe flooding that devastated communities in Southern Nigeria has displaced thousands of residents, destroyed properties, and rendered many communities uninhabitable. In response to this dire humanitarian situation, the Divine Act Charitable Trust (DACT) undertook a critical visit to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp located in Gwada, Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State. This report highlights the visit, documents DACT's activities, evaluates the situation in the camp, and proposes recommendations for long-term solutions to address the ongoing crisis.
Relief distribution activities carried out by the Divine Act Charitable Trust (DACT) at the Gwada IDP camp were designed to address the immediate needs of the displaced individuals and alleviate their suffering. Upon arrival, the team prioritized food distribution to combat hunger and malnutrition, which were evident among camp residents. The provision of staple food items and ready-to-eat meals was accompanied by efforts to ensure equitable distribution, particularly to vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and the elderly.
In addition to food, the DACT team focused on improving the health and hygiene of the camp inhabitants. A mobile clinic was established to provide on-site medical care, with medical professionals attending to common illnesses and dispensing essential medications. Immunization campaigns were organized for children, and education sessions were conducted to raise awareness about disease prevention and personal hygiene.
Recognizing the psychological impact of the displacement, the team provided counseling services and organized activities aimed at reducing stress and trauma, particularly for children. The entire distribution process was guided by principles of fairness, inclusion, and dignity, ensuring that all individuals received the support they needed. DACT's efforts brought immediate relief and hope to the camp residents while laying the groundwork for sustained assistance.
The visit to Gwada IDP camp by DACT underscored the urgent need for concerted efforts to address the humanitarian crisis caused by flooding in Southern Nigeria. While the immediate relief efforts provided a lifeline to displaced persons, sustainable solutions are critical to prevent such disasters in the future. DACT remains committed to supporting affected communities and advocating for policies that promote disaster resilience.
