We are thrilled to share the news that our core seed savers have successfully completed infrastructure projects supported by these funds. Thanks to your generosity we distributed $6,000 evenly to five of our core Seed Savers to help them build typhoon resilient greenhouses and improved composting facilities on their farms. Each of these efforts ensure they can grow organic produce and seeds year round, improve each farms income, and will expand the seed saving operations they began in 2016. All of the projects included funding from the farmers themselves, a critical demonstration of their commitment to this work.
Projects Supported Include:
- Built a new composting facility at a 2,000 square meter farm. This will allow the farm to increase their on-site production of compost and ensure local soil nutrients are kept on the farm. This improves the health of the soils and will lead to more robust organic seed and organic produce production.
- Built a new greenhouse on a diverse 200 square meter farm where the farmer grows over 20 different varieties of fruits and vegetables. This new greenhouse will be dedicated to organic seed production.
- Repaired a damaged greenhouse on another farm. This will allow the farmer to more than double their seed production in the coming year.
- Built a new greenhouse on a 1.5 hectare farm that will be dedicated to organic seed production.
- Repaired a damaged greenhouse (due to a recent typhoon) on another farm property. This will allow the farmer to more than double their seed production in the coming year and increase the quantity of organic vegetables sold at market.
It is critically important that organic farmers in the Philippines have access to the initial capital they need to build sustainable and robust farms. FoE believes that this type of capital should be load and debt free so as not to build the farmers long-term dependence on receiving loans. By helping to provide the proper infrastructure farmers need, they are able to focus on food and seed production and sales, which is what leads to their long-term sustainable livelihood.
