The Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to place communities under immense pressure, particularly in areas where churches and mosques bring together large numbers of people every week. In response, our organization is preparing a community-based project that will help religious institutions become safer spaces and active partners in Ebola prevention. The project will focus on practical hygiene measures, including handwashing facilities, chlorination, improved sanitation, infection prevention and control practices, and community awareness. Religious leaders, trainers, and community members will be engaged so that prevention messages can reach people through institutions they already know and trust.
Our project has an estimated budget of US$120,000. At this stage, no funds have yet been raised, and implementation has not started. We are currently in the preparation phase, identifying qualified trainers and potential learners and organizing the activities needed for the project to begin. With the support and collaboration of GlobalGiving, we are working to mobilize the resources required to reach our fundraising goal and put this initiative into action.
The need is urgent, but this project also represents an opportunity to build lasting community capacity. By investing in prevention knowledge, safe hygiene practices, water and sanitation facilities, and the capacity of local religious institutions, donors can help communities protect themselves not only during the current Ebola response but also against future public health emergencies. We warmly thank GlobalGiving for its partnership and for helping us connect this important local initiative with supporters around the world. We also thank every donor who chooses to stand with communities in eastern DRC. We invite individuals, foundations, organizations, and partners to contribute to this project and help us turn preparation into action. Every contribution can help bring essential prevention measures closer to the people who need them most.
