Devastating Flooding in Peru - FTW-CHOICE team goes FROM DEVELOPMENT TO RELIEF!

Summary

The devastating floods in and around Piura from January through March 2017 have caused millions of dollars of damage. CHOICE Humanitarian, through its offices and staff in Peru, is working to aid those whose livelihoods have been displaced.

Direct Need by the Numbers

CHOICE projects have been put on hold and funds have been diverted from community development programs to help ease the suffering of those directly impacted.  To date there have been 3,939 families affected with the destruction of 352 homes.

This area has received over 60 inches (152 cm) of rain in this period, and now 70% of the region is flooded. Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and flies as a result, Dengue Fever is now endemic.

Dry fuel for heat and cooking is scarce, and because of washed out roads, the cost of food and potable water has risen precipitously, if it can be found.

Total Need

The people of Piura desperately need:

  • Sandbags to help reduce pools of water and protect existing structures from additional flooding
  • Corrugated panels, tents and tarps for emergency shelters
  • Non-Perishable food and water containers
  • Clothing
  • Mattresses and bedding
  • Medical Supplies including insect repellents, antibiotics, antihistamines, anti-inflammatories, etc.
  • Tools – Shovels, manual pumps, generators, sewage pumps, water treatment kits, water purification tablets
  • Disposable Diapers
  • Lanterns and Emergency Lighting

Our in-country teams are purchasing these much needed supplies in the local communities to help support them financially.  If they cannot find it locally, they will purchase it in the larger cities and transport it to the devastated areas. If supplies are not available to them, we are working with XPO logistics to ship items from the US.

You Can Make It Happen

Your generous donation to CHOICE Humanitarian can help us help the villages in this region. The need is great to help villagers who have lost everything begin to rebuild.  Additionally, funds diverted from our normal community building efforts need to be restored so that we can continue our efforts to build strong communities in Peru.
