So much can be learned from watching a child grow. When a child grows in height and weight you know he is getting enough to eat. If the child is active and curious, learning easily and playing with vigor you know the nutrition and the calories are there to meet the big requirements for healthy child growth. Parents around the world want healthy growth for their children. Wouldn't you agree? Feed the World agrees and is doing something about it in Peru. The World Bank reports that nearly 30% of the children in Peru have stunted height due to malnutrition.
Feed the World, together with the University of Piura, the Regional Government of Frias, and the local town of Frias, piloted a one year project teaching 150 families how to provide complete nutrition by planting sequential gardens, raising small livestock, field crops, proper hygiene and food security.
The project was a huge success! So much that the Frias Region is requesting several more years of the project for families. What they know is their families are eating better food with better nutrition. Their energy is up and they want more training. They are seeing the possibility of not needing to be fearful of unforeseen circumstances, like crop failure, which usually meant extreme hunger for their families. Then the families will begin to see and foster economic possibilities because basic needs like food will be met.
So let's talk about how the next success can happen. Feed the World has the expertise and trainers with a proven track record of training families. More families want training so Feed the World starts training the trainers. But wait! There is a hitch in the cog. The Frias Region is extremely mountainous terrain and the one and only Feed the World vehicle just bit the dust. That doesn't stop Feed the World! Travel by public transportation is the way the program is still happening but any efficiency is lost. By bus it takes an average of three hours longer to get to any of the project sites. It's true the work can go on but it's like working with one hand tied behind your back. The reward for the effort is children receiving adequate nutrition for growth. Please consider donating. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
