In the rural areas of Peru, families struggle to meet their needs. They have found a solution with onions and garlic. In conjunction with the technicians at CHOICE Humanitarian the community of Santa Elana is growing onions and several communites on the Andean Plateau are growing garlic. Why these strange crops?
Onions and garlic are common ingredients of many recipes in Peru. The communities realized that their farms can produce high quality onions and garlic that can be sold in the city markets for a very good price. The money raised from the sales of these products provides a good income for the family.
In the community of Santa Elena growing onions is part of the family farming project. They are excited to announce the start of planting onions. Local families are deeply committed to working together with the CHOICE team to achieve exceptional results. They love working as a team!
Working with the technicians at CHOICE Humanitarian, the communities learned how to grow large qualities of these products. They formed cooperatives to work together on the harder aspects of the process. After harvest the cooperatives chose representatives to take their products to market to obtain the best price possible.
On the Andean Plateau the communities are excited to share the success of the harvest of their garlic growing project.Thanks to the dedication and collaboration of the local communities, they have achieved very good results. Women particpate and thus have their own source of income. Grandmothers work in the fields with their grandchildren teaching them the skills that will help them be successful.
The CHOICE technicians also help the community members learn about health, hygeine, education and business. These additional classes help the commuity members to be healthier, happier and successful in their business.
