Life is a challenge in the Meseta Andina (high mountain plains) of northern Peru. Finding a product that is used in their every day diets, grows well, sells easily and is transportable to the market is a challenge. The CHOICE Humanitarian Peru team worked with the communities to grow garlic which fits all of these criteria. At first the community farmers were skeptical because it was something new. After some very successful trial runs, the farmers became excited and committed to the project.
Now the community members grow garlic for their own consumption and don't have to drive to the market to get it. To the contrary, they are able to produce enough for their own needs and to sell also. The garlic has a very stable life span and transports very easily. It sells very easily in the large cities and brings a very good price due to the high quality of product that they produce.
Abram and his family struggled to make ends meet nutrtionally and financially. Growing garlic has given them a boost in their family situation. Now they have a sustainable source of income to cover household expenses and educational costs.
