South Africa's National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) is doing some great work, but there are still challenges to overcome. The programme aims to enhance learning capacity through healthy meals, improving punctuality, attendance, and concentration. Here are some key stats:
- *Beneficiaries*: Over 9.9 million learners in almost 20,000 schools benefit from the NSNP.
- *Early Childhood Development*: 29% of children aged 0-4 are part of the population, with 1,660,316 enrolled in Early Learning Programmes (ELPs).
- Nutrition Challenges*: 21% of children under five receive a minimum acceptable diet, with 5% prevalence of Nutrition Challenges in South Africa.
The NSNP faces challenges like lack of funding, role ambiguity, and inadequate infrastructure, which affect the quality and quantity of food provided.
