With schools in Kenya having now closed, the delivery of our feeding programme has come to an end for another year. It has been a year in which we have delivered more meals to more pupils than in any previous year since we launched the programme at a single partner school in September 2013.
Summary of the year
This year was the first year that all 2,400+ children across all our six long-standing partner schools received a lunch each-and-every school day, from the start of term one in January to the final day of the academic year in early November (a total of 185 days). It was also a year during which we further extended the programme, reaching an additional 125 children at our newest partner school, Ngambenyi Primary, for the final term of the year.
All-in-all, over the course of the year, we have delivered approximately 460,000 meals at a total cost of around £33,600 ($42,000).
With significant rain not having fallen since May, and families struggling to put food on the table for their children at home, our school lunch programme and the guarantee of one full meal five days a week has become an ever more vital lifeline for the some of the most vulnerable members of this community.
Looking ahead to next year
Next year will begin with nearly 2,600 children enrolled across our now seven partner schools and our feeding programme will reach every one of them for the entire year. The cost of delivering these 475,000 meals has been budgeted at around £37,800 ($47,200).
We have been working hard through the year to raise these funds and we are now faced with a shortfall of just over £9,000 ($11,200) to reach this target.
MATCHED donations to this project
This Tuesday (29th November) is #GivingTuesday and for 24 hours from midnight EST donations to this project (when made via GlobalGiving.org) will be 50% MATCHED as part of GlobalGiving’s #MatchAMillion campaign in partnership with The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
A donation of $100 from you, for example, would be worth up to $140 to us once matching funds and GlobalGiving’s fees are accounted for.
Donations can be made at www.globalgiving.org/projects/18273 and we would be very grateful for anything you can give to celebrate #GivingTuesday and towards securing the future of this vital programme for another year.
Thank you.
