We are now mid-way through the current school term in Kenya, the first in which all 2,400 children across our partner schools have all received a daily lunch through our feeding programme. So far this year we have provided around 180,000 meals; we expect to deliver some 400,000 meals in total during 2015. We are delighted that we have reached this important milestone and that no child now goes through the school day hungry.
Last month we were joined in Kenya by Suzanne Payne, a supporter and charity ambassador who has been raising funds to feed the 230 pupils at Kiteghe Primary School since early 2014. Suzanne visited the school to see the programme in action and sent us these comments:
"Upon returning to Kasigau a year on from my first visit, I am thrilled to say that all of the six partner schools are now part of the feeding programme. The children looked healthier and brighter than when I had seen them a little over a year ago. It is now more evident that the schools are places where children can grow and thrive.
The meals that African Promise provides to all of its schools are making a difference to the children of Kasigau, their families and in turn to the communities themselves. It is not just a meal; it is an opportunity to set a child on a successful path, by giving them a strong foundation. Well fed children think better, learn more and therefore will be equipped with the tools they need to pull themselves out of poverty, potentially improving the lives of others in the community in the process.
The parents are so appreciative of the feeding programme African Promise delivers. We were treated to joyful singing and dancing as a show of gratitude from many of the mums during a visit to one of the schools. They spoke so highly of African Promise and all of its supporters. It was clearly evident that African Promises’ commitment to this area and to the feeding programme is seen as an important and valued project, for which they are very grateful. It is such a small expense for such a large gain. It is making a difference and I am so thankful for those supporting African Promise in the work that they selflessly do to ensure a better tomorrow for these children."
The feeding programme is funded now at its current level until the end of the year, however we have already set our sights on our fundraising target for next year, which stands at £50,000 ($78,000). As reported in our previous update, one of our corporate sponsors in the UK is matching all donations we receive towards this sum before the end of 2015, meaning we need only raise £25,000 from other sources. Could this include you? Our project page remains live on GlobalGiving and we continue to accept and welcome any donations, large or small!
Thank you!
