Community Food Kit program - first year report

By Chris Evans | Executive Director

Rain or shine, we are there!
Rain or shine, we are there!

When Feed Northland Kids created this program to feed families unable to reach our in-school pantries, at a time it was needed most and even more families would become food-insecure, we could not accurately predict how long the program would need to be in place.

Our first round of this new program, developed in a two-week time frame, operated for 14 weeks and encompassed four distribution sites for seven school districts as well as a delivery component for each. Our system developed over time, fine-tuned and was running quite efficiently with the use of a donated warehouse and many volunteers. In those 14 weeks, we purchased food in bulk, packed into kits and made 9,300 available for either pickup or delivery.

With the pandemic affecting school openings for the 2021-2022 school year, we were asked to continue the program for all seven districts. Most schools operated on a hybrid schedule for those who did not attend 100% virtual learning. With kids and families only able to access the in-school pantries two out of five days, and so many more hungry families in need, we tweaked the program, switching our sites to school buildings and engaging school personnel to help with most of the packing and distributing. Beginning in early September and running through late June, we packed and distributed or delivered 26,000 Community Food Kits.

Our ability to order the 16 to 18 food items in bulk, plus fresh bread for each kit, each week was efficient but also quite expensive!  With a generous CARES act grant, we were able to add a large box of fresh produce to our Clay County recipients, bringing our weekly total per family to $30. A steady 750 families were picking up or receiving these kits and produce boxes for the bulk of the school year. Despite a donated warehouse, discounted pricing for pick up of pallets of food and delivery of repacked pallets to each of the eight sites, nearly $700,000 was spent on this program and funds were procured a variety of ways:

  • grants
  • corporations
  • individuals
  • community groups

Our 10 board members and executive directors are of one mind: Feed hungry children and families in our area of Kansas City. A pandemic which increased the number of families needing assistance and presented a challenge to allow access to the programs in place, only served to solidify our intent. Bringing the product to the kids and families was the only way to ensure hungry kids and families in our middle and high school age groups continued to have access to healthy, nutritious and regularly available food.

We have identified a continuing nook of families in need of this assistance, due in part to a lingering pandemic and lag in employment. This Community Food Kit program has now become a permanent third feeding program for our organization! Our annual budget has doubled and our resolve to ensure our kids and families are fed remains strong!
