We are very grateful for the kind hearts of our donors who, through GlobalGiving, joined in with acts of generosity and solidarity to transform the lives of Colombian children. This year we have delivered more than 11,574 pounds of products, equivalent to 25 million food plates, to the most vulnerable.
You already know malnutrition is a wake-up call to those like you who want to respect life in Colombia. Hunger denounces inequality and is a heartbreaking image of the extreme poverty many people face in our country. On the 7th of September, official data released astonishing numbers: more than 197 children under five years old have died from malnutrition during this year in Colombia.
We must take care of our children and give them the nutrients their bodies need to stay healthy, active, and strong. In Colombia, the only daily food many children receive is the one they get at their daycare center or the social kitchen of their neighborhood. More than ever, we would like to remind all our allies of the need for their support to our programs to guarantee food security for the most vulnerable and precious: our children.
From zero to five years of age, a child who does not receive the essential nutrients would grow less, learn more slowly, and won't develop to its fullest. Our goal is to provide meals that include all food categories in the required quantity according to the nutritional recommendations for the age range. Meals are of good quality and defined according to Colombian traditions. The meals served at schools or care centers are usually for kids whose parents are working long hours and can't take care of their children's needs.
Thank you for supporting our daily effort. This last month we celebrated 21 years in this crusade against hunger. Today, we invite you, once again, to walk with us and support our tasks to ensure that food in Colombia becomes a right and not a privilege.
