Summary

Nutritional and health status are powerful influences on a child's learning and on how well a child performs in school. Children who lack certain nutrients in their diet (particularly iron and iodine), or who suffer from protein-energy malnutrition, hunger, parasitic infections or other diseases, do not have the same potential for learning as healthy and well-nourished children. Weak health and poor nutrition among school-age children diminish their cognitive development.

Challenge

In Uganda, the lack of school feeding programs for orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) causes severe malnutrition, high dropout rates, and poor academic performance, compounded by poverty and inconsistent parental support. Orphans face a "double tragedy" of losing parents and missing essential nutritional support, limiting their cognitive development and educational access. Hunger and malnutrition hinder orphans' ability to concentrate, leading to poor performance and high dropout rates.

Solution

One of the most effective ways to address the effects of hunger among orphaned learners is the introduction of inclusive school feeding programs that ensure vulnerable children receive at least one nutritious meal during the school day. School feeding programs help improve concentration, attendance, and academic performance. According to the World Food Programme, providing meals at school increases enrolment and reduces absenteeism among vulnerable children, especially in low-income communities.

Long-Term Impact

School feeding contributes to improved nutrition and physical development among children. Regular access to balanced meals reduces the risk of malnutrition, stunting, and micronutrient deficiencies. The World Health Organization notes that adequate nutrition during childhood is essential for proper physical growth, brain development, and long-term health outcomes (WHO, 2018). In the long run, well-nourished children grow into healthier adults with stronger immune systems and lower risks.
