PROGRESS REPORT.

Project Background.

New Mercy Nursery school is a non-for-profit community-based Organization registered with Kole district Local Government. It envisions promoting education system, good healthcare and uplifting economic growth and opportunities amongst Adolescent youth and young girls and Orphans and vulnerable children in Kole district so that they can live a transformative and inclusive life with limited barriers on basic needs, self-reliance and education.

Northern Uganda experienced two decades of Lord’s Resistance Army from (1986 to 2006) which culminated in a drastic economic setback, many development sectors were crippled; education, Health and economic sectors were most affected. Many lives were lost, properties looted and many people were displaced leading to camps and internal displacement settlement. The communities are in the post-trauma and rehabilitation phase and healings. Many Government interventions have been initiated to uplift education like establishment of more schools to promote the education system but the intervention does not consider the needs of the common child who has no parent (Orphans and vulnerable children), it is highly urbanized living the rural community in absurdity with no basic supports, studies materials to enhance their education.

Kole district is one of the affected communities; the district is located in the northern part of Uganda and has recorded the lowest school enrolment in 2023 by 30% of the eligible children aged 3-7 who are supposed to be enrolled for pre-primary and primary school and the highest school dropout of 46.8% in 2022. This low enrolment is due to the inability of the caregiver to provide food for the children while at school, buy school uniform and pay small amounts of money meant for school development and as well an increased numbers of orphans and vulnerable children and few pre-primary schools in Kole district.

NewMercy Nursery school was vetted by GlobalGiving in 2024 to mobilize funds and resources to provides meal for the children, provides books and pens, provides playing materials, Studies material, Furniture, School uniforms and classroom construction for the identified orphan and vulnerable children, provision of psychosocial support, food and seconds hand clothes to the orphans and vulnerable  children under GlobalGiving project code 66512 and  donation page link https://goto/gg/75285  but we could not adequately raised money to support the noble cause.

New mercy has a total enrolment of 200 children (Female 110, Male 90). 150 of the children (Female 71, male 79) are direct beneficiaries. These 150 are children from; 50 are from destitute household (extremely economically disadvantaged family), 71 Children who are double orphans, 15 Children who lost relatives during the insurgency of Lord Resistance Army, 14 are children infected of HIV and are on medication. New mercy through has devoted to giving access to education for pre-primary and primary education for these 150 orphans and vulnerable education

Problem Statement.

Access to education for the orphaned children is an important issue that must be tacked in order to ensure their overall wellbeing and future prospects because orphans children face numerous challenges and barriers when it comes to accessing education including financial constraint, lack of support system, lack of school feeding program (SFP) and limited opportunities since the caregivers cannot raise money to pay school fees, buy school uniform, books, pens and others school requirement (Mwoma & Pillay, 2018). These limited their chances for continuity in education and lead to irregular school attendance, poor performances in class, school dropout.

School feeding programs provide essential daily nutrition, alleviating short-term hunger so students can concentrate and perform better academically. In vulnerable and rural areas, these meals serve as a vital incentive for parents to send their children to school, thereby increasing overall enrollment, improving attendance, and reducing dropout rates.

Success Registered Within the reporting period.

1. Supported 30 Orphans and Vulnerable Children with school Uniforms.

2. Provided meals to 150 Orphans and Vulnerable Children who are attending school.

3. Given books and pens to Orphans and Vulnerable

4. Secured a land for the construction of class room blocks

Challenges.

1. Lack of playing materials

2. Lack of classroom blocks for learners.

3. Lack of school desks

4. Inadequate food to fully implement school food program

Recommendation

1. We are requesting more financial support to enable us implement other activities.

2. We are requesting and looking for Child sponsorship.
