Summary of the Project
The Sustainable World Zimbabwe Trust is implementing a food aid program to support 500 children under the age of five in Makoni District, Manicaland Province. These children are at high risk of malnutrition due to the El Niño-induced drought that severely affected the 2023/2024 farming season. With a target of $50,000, the project seeks to provide monthly food hampers consisting of maize meal, beans, cooking oil, and salt. These hampers are distributed to households caring for the affected children.
Progress Since the Last Report
Since our last update, we received a donation of $200 from generous supporters. While no additional donations have come in since then, this contribution has enabled us to begin limited distribution of food aid to the most vulnerable families.
Food Distribution: We managed to provide initial food support to a small group of households with children most severely affected by malnutrition. Parents expressed gratitude, highlighting how the assistance helped them cope during this difficult period.
Community Engagement: Our field team has continued to identify and register children under five who are malnourished. This ensures accurate targeting once more funds are available.
Monitoring Malnutrition Trends: We are working closely with local health workers to track weight and nutrition indicators of registered children. This helps us monitor progress and adjust intervention strategies.
Challenges Faced
Funding Gap: Out of the $50,000 goal, we still need $49,800 to fully reach the target of serving all 500 children. The lack of consistent funding limits the frequency and reach of our food distributions.
Climate Change Impact: Families in Makoni District continue to struggle due to prolonged drought conditions. Local harvests remain insufficient, meaning children remain at risk of malnutrition without urgent intervention.
Next Steps
-
Scale Up Food Distribution – Once additional funds are secured, we will expand the monthly food hamper program to reach all 500 children.
-
Community Nutrition Education – Alongside food aid, we will train caregivers on preparing nutritious meals with available resources.
-
Strengthen Partnerships – We are actively engaging local clinics, community leaders, and international donors to support and sustain this initiative.
Long-Term Outlook
With full funding, this initiative will:
-
Eliminate malnutrition among 500 children under five in Makoni District.
-
Improve food security for over 1,000 indirect beneficiaries (siblings, parents, and guardians).
-
Build resilience in communities affected by drought and climate change.
A Call to Action
We are deeply grateful to our past donors for believing in this cause. Today, we ask for your continued support to help us bridge the funding gap. Every contribution — no matter the size — brings us closer to ensuring that no child in Makoni District goes to bed hungry.
Together, we can restore hope and health to these young lives.
