Project Update - Expansion of the Virtual Doctors

By Huw Jones | Founder & President

Thank you to everyone who has supported the Expansion of the Virtual Doctors in Zambia project. Although $383 of the $436,000 target has been raised through GlobalGiving so far, we are happy to report that the programme has continued to expand successfully thanks to additional funding from other sources.

This support has enabled the Virtual Doctors service to reach 380 health facilities across Zambia, with 468 clinicians actively using the service in 44 districts. These clinicians, working in some of the country’s most remote and under-resourced settings, are able to access timely clinical advice from volunteer doctors via the Virtual Doctors telemedicine platform. This remote support strengthens diagnosis, treatment, and referral decisions, directly improving patient care.

The impact of this expansion is significant. Rural health workers are better equipped to manage complex cases locally, reducing unnecessary referrals and helping patients receive quality care closer to home. Clinicians also benefit from ongoing learning and mentorship, building confidence and strengthening the health system from the ground up.

While these achievements demonstrate what is possible, continued funding is critical to sustain and further expand the service. We remain committed to promoting our GlobalGiving page and raising awareness of this vital work. With increased support, we can reach more facilities, support more clinicians, and ensure that even more patients in rural Zambia have access to high-quality care.
