After a fun (and very busy) two months, HOCW says “goodbye for now” to the children who have been attending our latest holiday program. Word of mouth travels fast in Ndejje – since November, more and more children between the ages of 3 and 14 years old have arrived every day to learn and play with teachers Brenda and Jackie, as well as volunteers from around the world. Activities that the kids have enjoyed include arts and crafts, drama, music, exercise and English lessons. We hosted over 100 children at our Kids Day celebration on Friday, January 30th, when we wished them luck for a successful upcoming school term. HOCW will continue to sponsor 43 kids in the upcoming term, and we thank our gracious donors for making this possible.
One of the biggest highlights of the children’s program was our special theatrical production of “Finding Nemo,” which was arranged by volunteers Jackee Chang and Irene Girgis on January 13th. The cast was made up of thirty talented kids, with the older ones playing the major roles such as Nemo, Dory and Nemo’s father and with the littlest ones acting as adorable turtles, scary sharks, “Sea Friends” and “Sea Life.” Performance day drew a crowd of about 120 children and we even had a special dance performance at the end to say goodbye to Irene, Jackee and volunteer Charlotte Haigh. The kids performed in custom-made outfits which were donated by volunteers and sewn by the hard-working members of the HOCW tailoring collective. It was wonderful to see the dedicated actors get a standing ovation at the end of the show!
The growth of HOCW’s children’s program underscores the need for a larger space where we can continue to host such fun performances. Fitting 120 kids in our current compound was a bit of a challenge, but we made it work! We are grateful for your donations that will help us provide more space for programs like this in the future. We have nearly reached the halfway point towards our project fundraising goal of $15,000 and it is thanks to all of YOU. Our current goal is to move into the larger compound by July 1st and with a bit of luck and continued hard work we will get there. Thanks to all our donors and BRAVO for the great work!
