Dear Friends,
It is a pleasure to write to you our first quarterly report since launching this project on GlobalGiving.
Many thanks to our donors who have helped to raise nearly $500!
In a recent conversation with the president and founder, Grégoire Ahongbonon, he expressed gratitude and optimism. Despite many economic challenges, he is enthusiastic about expanding the work of Association Saint Camille (ASC) "more and more". This expansion into Nigeria is a top priority. Approximately 90 Nigerians per year cross the border seeking treatment in Benin. ASC owns 3 hectares (7.4 acres) in Lagos State. 35 tons of cement have been purchased, and bricks have been made. But, more funding is needed to proceed.
$50,000 USD is needed to build a wall around the property. This wall is important in order to secure the property from use by unauthorized people, and as security for vulnerable patients. Materials are one-third more expensive in Nigeria compared to Benin. The identical architectural blueprint as the newest center in Dassa, Benin, will be used.
It is exciting to help in any way that we can, especially because this is ASC's first expansion into a country with more English-speakers. We are optimistic about attracting a larger corps of mental health providers to assist with treatment needs in this well-established model of comprehensive care. Research is welcome to further validate the model and add innovative treatment options specific to this setting.
