Expand Mental Health Support to the Community

Neema Community Counseling

Expanding access to counseling in rural Kenya is essential for building healthier relationships within homes, particularly among couples and in parenting. At Neema, we recognize the deep impact that emotional and mental well-being has on family life and community stability. To support this, Neema recently offered a free counseling workshop to community members, providing them with tools to manage stress and improve their relationships. The session focused on Effective Stress Management Strategies, including physical activity, deep breathing techniques like the 4-7-8 method, building social support by encouraging openness with counselors, pastors, or trusted individuals, and practicing relaxation techniques such as guided meditation and calming music.

We also emphasized the importance of sleep hygiene for mental clarity and stress recovery. During the group activity, participants were led through a simple breathing exercise followed by a reflection on how they felt—many noted a noticeable shift in mood and tension levels. The session also integrated spiritual encouragement, teaching that prayer, meditation, gratitude, and trusting in a higher power can significantly ease emotional burdens.

The workshop concluded with a reminder that suicide is not a solution and that, with the right tools and support, stress can be managed effectively. The impact was profound. Some of the pastors’ wives in attendance expressed heartfelt gratitude and committed to sharing the teachings with their church communities. Pastors also encouraged more couples to attend future sessions together for the benefit of the entire family.

“I have never got such teaching that I have got from here at Neema elsewhere. I feel so happy that I have been able to come here today because I would have missed. It has really blessed me, and I am grateful for the invitation.”

“I came when I was overloaded with a lot of stress and my heart felt like bursting. I was so low with too many thoughts but after the teaching I feel so happy and light at heart. I am leaving Neema a different person, and I think I will continue to come when I am invited.”

“I will practice what I have learnt here today because I did not know that prayer and meditation can help in managing stress and moving forward, I will put it into practice. Every time I come to Neema I have a lot to learn and that is why I am encouraging women to come with their husbands whenever there is training here because it is so impactful.”

“I have always been in deep thoughts mostly at night whereby I would sleep so late at night but from this teaching I have learnt that good sleep can help in managing stress and I will try hard to practice what I have learnt here today.”

“I have learnt to be content with what I have in order to manage stress.”
