Our project has two objectives which are achievable, urgently needed, and interlinked: 1) Provide uninterrupted access to primary healthcare through supporting and developing the capacity of a locally staffed, high-quality microclinic in the vibrant but marginalized community of Fort Saint Michel (FSM). 2) Strengthen community health in FSM and enable services to be more responsive to local needs by recruiting and training community health workers and training microclinic staff to supervise.
Haiti continues to witness an alarming escalation in armed conflict and insecurity, with widespread impact on the country's health system, which the UN humanitarian affairs agency recently warned was "nearing collapse." This is against the backdrop of a surge in cholera cases across the country, food insecurity, unemployment, and internal displacement. Archangel Airborne has been active in Fort St. Michel, a marginalized community in Cap Haitien with roughly 25,000 residents, for over a decade.
In 2019, Archangel Airborne entered into a contractual agreement with Haitian clinicians to establish a more regular clinical presence with long-term partner, Notre Dame D'Altagrace and, in 2021, funded the procurement of a shipping container-based microclinic. The Dr. Jean F. Hibbert Memorial Clinic officially opened its doors in 2022 now seeing up to 250 patients/mo. We aim to strengthen community-based health access by training five community health workers (CHWs) who report into the clinic.
In partnership, we will continuously optimize our clinic, quality of care, and services offered; we also believe infrastructure is one side of the coin. It is vital that we are complementary to the health system. We will amplify impact by convening local health partners, aligning with Ministry of Health priorities, and encouraging cross-pollination of supported programs (e.g., provision of safe water, nutrition) and bolstered community presence through roll-out of the CHW program.
