Introduction:
The global market for e-rickshaws is projected to reach USD 2,425.1 million by 2024, with an expected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 31.8% from 2024 to 2034. Sales of electric tuk-tuks worldwide are estimated to total USD 38,360.8 million by 2034. However, the current number of service centers for these vehicles remains inadequate to meet the growing demand.
The Desai Foundation has launched an initiative to empower women in rural communities by providing specialized training in renewable energy and electric vehicle (EV) technology. By equipping women with essential expertise, we believe they can become catalysts for the increased adoption and maintenance of solar power systems and inspire a shift towards electric tuk-tuks. This will contribute to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation.
Objectives:
The program targets local women and adolescent girls aged 18-35 from the villages of Gehunkheda and Bairagad Chichli in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. This demographic is selected for their potential to achieve self-employment and economic independence through specialized training in renewable energy and EV maintenance. By equipping them with these skills, the program aims to enhance their economic stability and contribute to community development.
Achievements:
From April to June of this year, we have successfully completed several key phases of our EV Rickshaw program, including Infrastructure Setup and Resource Planning, Curriculum Development, Mobilization and Enrollment, and Staff Recruitment.
We have mobilized 30 beneficiaries for solar training and 35 for EV training through targeted community meetings and door-to-door awareness campaigns.
The program will be rolled out over 12 months, structured into four batches, with the second batch starting in October 2024!!
Goals of our EV program:
Vision: Our vision is to empower women in environmentally vulnerable communities with cutting-edge skills that enable them to thrive in a changing world. We aspire to offer these women opportunities for income generation, enhance their capacity to adapt to climate challenges, and enable them to play a pivotal role in advancing sustainable development.
