Equip deafblind children with skills for life!

In this progress report we want to tell you the story of one the children in our Deaf-Blind & Multi-Handicapped (DBMH) program, because this story shows the goals of our program and what we want to achieve with it.

Ng Chee Chong was referred to St.Nicholas’ Home by Malaysian Association for the Blind in mid-July last year.
Chee Chong was 7 years old then. Chee Chong’s father is a farmer while his mother is a housewife.

Apart from having visual problem (retinis pigmentosa), Chee Chong is a hyperactive child (ADHD). When he first came to St.Nicholas’ Home, Chee Chong was only able to understand and follow very simple instructions in both Mandarin and Malay. However, he required full assistance in daily living skills such as eating, dressing himself, drinking, etc. He was still drinking from the bottle. Chee Chong only speaks very little and likes humming to himself.

After a year in the DBMG program, Chee Chong is able to remain seated in one place to do some activities. Today
we are proud to say that he can drink from a cup and dress himself. Chee Chong is also speaking better in both Mandarin and Malay. Teachers hope to work hand-in-hand with Chee Chong’s parents to equip him with simple abilities to take care of himself in the home environment. We look forward to the day when Chee Chong would be able to accomplish more in fending for himself daily and handling simple tasks to be self-sufficient.
