Through Global Giving Foundation donations and grants from local foundations Carpenter St. Croix Valley Nature Center was able to offer 4 internships in 2009 and is currently working with one environmental education intern in 2010, with plans to hire more interns during the next few months. These students come from as far away as Ireland to gain valuable experience teaching youth about the interconnections of the natural world. The opportunity to get hands-on experience allows the students to 'test dirve' a career. At least one of our interns from 2009 has gone on to get a job in the environmental education field. A second intern loved their experience working with children but has switched tracks to pursue a career in wildlife monitoring and research. In the current economy with full-time positions difficult to attain, the internship opportunities offered at Carpenter Nature Center provide valuable hands-on experience that gives our interns an advanatage when they are applying for jobs.
