To combat the illegal fishing activities and assist the Ngarchelong RANGERS in efficiently and effectively managing their marine protected area (MPA), OneReef provided funds to purchase a boat repurposed as a floating ranger station. The boat is being prepared for the launch, and a new program is being developed to recruit four young champions to shadow the reef rangers, going to "hot spots" on weekends to deter illegal fishing activities (e.g., poaching).
The Ngarchelong Rangers are also teaming up with neighboring states on their efforts and will be equipped with drones to increase their surveillance and enforcement capacity and reach. The governor of Ngarchelong, Richard Ngiratrang, supports our wise investments in Floating Ranger Stations to deter poaching activities that harm the food supply of the local community.
The community has also requested funds for a floating/mobile ranger station that will be shared with Kayangel. Sharing resources like this increase operational and financial efficiency.
We are still raising funds for continued support to the rangers and reef monitoring in Ngarchelong.
Thank you for your continued support!
