Late last year, thanks to numerous donations made by individuals like you, OneReef was able to buy some basic surveillance equipment for rangers in Palau. Due to COVID restrictions, it was challenging to ship the gear promptly. Finally, in March 2021, the gear arrived in Palau! OneReef presented a pair of binoculars, a drone, 2 GPS units and a GoPro camera to Ngarchelong State Governor Richard Ngiraterang and his Ranger Team on March 25th. This equipment was made possible through numerous donations made by individuals like you and will help the Ngarchelong Rangers monitor their 1,964 km2 marine managed area (MMA) more efficiently. The binoculars and drone provide wider coverage with cost-savings on fuel and human resources commonly needed to patrol the MMA. The GPS units and Go-Pro camera are necessary for proper documentation of non-compliance incidents, Additionally, they will be used to continue 3D imaging conducted by the Rangers themselves to visually record their reef health year-to-year. Together with the U.S. Forestry Service $50k grant under the Pacific Island Forest Reforestation Initiative (PIFRI), OneReef is now providing technical and financial support for a ridge-to-reef ecosystem-based management approach to managing Ngarchelong’s protected areas.
We are continuing to raise more money for this project. The rangers need more binoculars, GoPros, and a second drone with a longer range.
