Benefits of Tree Ceilings: A Teacher's Perspective

By Ernesto Rodriguez | Executive Director

Attention Restoration Theory (ART) is the scientific foundation behind Nature In The Classroom and the installation of tree canopy ceiling murals in classrooms.

Many students spend six to seven hours each day in classrooms with little or no access to windows or natural views. Tree canopy ceiling murals bring the restorative qualities of nature into these spaces by surrounding students with the visual experience of looking up into a forest canopy, much as they would outdoors.

Research supporting Attention Restoration Theory has shown that exposure to nature can:

  • Improve concentration and sustained attention.
  • Reduce mental fatigue and stress.
  • Increase feelings of calm and emotional regulation.
  • Support learning, creativity, and cognitive performance.
  • Create classroom environments that feel safer, more welcoming, and more conducive to learning.

A teacher summarized these findings this way: "I would definitely say that in the last three years since you put up the tile that my classes have been more calm, less discipline issues, and helps me build my classroom community because I stress that we are a family and work on being emotionally safe in our room; the tiles support the mood/effect that I'm trying to build with my students."

This what your support has helped achieve.  Thank You!!!
