This project will fund newborn genotype testing and provide enhanced vaccines beyond the routine publicly provided immunization for newborns in rural areas in Nasarawa State, Nigeria, where SCD is highly prevalent.
In rural north-central Nigeria, most babies with sickle cell disease (SCD) are diagnosed only after severe illness. Early testing is rare because genotype screening is not part of routine newborn care, and many families cannot afford the $3.60 test or lack awareness of prenatal counselling. Critical vaccines for SCD infants are also unaffordable for many families. As a result, many children face preventable illness, disability, and death before age five.
This 12month pilot project in Keffi, Karu, and Toto LGAs will introduce newborn genotype screening and fully funded enhanced vaccines for infants diagnosed with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). The project will cover the cost of genotype testing through partnerships with the existing laboratories and pay for enhanced vaccines in addition to the governmentfunded routine immunization schedule.
Early detection and early vaccination are the two most effective strategies for reducing SCD related child mortality. By eliminating financial barriers and bringing genotype testing and enhanced vaccines directly to underserved communities, this project will: Reduce infant mortality among children with SCD. Prevent severe infections, emergency hospitalizations, and catastrophic medical expenses.
