Help Us to Bring Genetic Counselling to Families

By Elizabeth Elachi | Project Leader

Dear partners,

Across Northern Nigeria, thousands of families are caring for sickle cell children without ever having understood how the condition is inherited. Many parents do not know their genotype, have never received guidance on genetic risks, and often learn about sickle cell disease only after their child experiences a painful crisis. This lack of information leaves families confused, frightened, and unsure of how to protect their children or plan for the future.

Genetic counselling changes that. It gives families the knowledge they need to make informed decisions — not through pressure or judgment, but through clear, compassionate education. Counselling helps parents understand how sickle cell disease is passed from one generation to the next, what their genotype means, and how early diagnosis and preventive care can dramatically improve a child’s health. It also reduces stigma, strengthens communication within families, and empowers communities to break cycles of misinformation.

Our project is committed to making genetic counselling accessible to families who have never had the opportunity to receive it. With your support, we are integrating counselling sessions into our mobile clinics, vaccination centers, and hospital partnerships. Caregivers will receive simple, practical explanations about inheritance patterns, newborn screening, and the importance of knowing one’s genotype. We are also training frontline health workers to deliver counselling in a respectful, culturally sensitive way.

In the coming days, once GlobalGiving releases the next round of funds, we will launch a radio outreach program dedicated to genetic education. These broadcasts will reach rural and displaced families who cannot attend clinic sessions, teaching them how to check their genotype, how to interpret results, and how to seek counselling without fear or stigma. Radio remains one of the most powerful tools for reaching communities that have been left out of formal health systems.

Your generosity is helping us build a future where families understand their genetic risks and can make choices that protect their children. I will return soon with updates from the field so you can see the impact your kindness is making.

Thank you for standing with these families.

Warmly,
