English Teacher Certification in Haiti

Our school is excited to share updates including developing classes and teacher training with you. 

This year our goal is to certify our English teachers. While this remains a priority, we have taken a step towards growing our school and student body. With grateful hearts, we have partnered with Eddy Vertil, a highly awarded consultant who excels in project management and business strategy. He has been developing curriculum for an Entrepreneurial course that will be offered in both English and Haitian Creole. This new class will be offered at our school starting January 2025. 

In addition, we have hired two grant writers to help us submit proposals and grant applications to select organizations. Two grants have been submitted so far and we expect two more by February 2025. The object of these grants is to provide funding for our teacher certification. 

We look forward to more opportunities and progress to come.   

While we have not raised funds through GlobalGiving, our school doors have remained open despite various political distress and gang activity. We have successfully continued our regularly scheduled terms and are currently supporting our Summer Camp whereby children can learn, enjoy one meal a day and participate in recreational activities. 

Recently, our Director Ernso Sylvain hosted a training session for teachers of HHP and completed the TEFL Course through Bridge.

Ernso has been training and coaching the teachers on designing lesson plans and ensuring effective learning takes place. They have learned about the significant impact of good classroom management and have been introduced to concepts such as promoting a sense of agency, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and self-regulation among students.

In completing the Bridge 150 hour Master course this year, Ernso has better understood the teacher training program. Bridge covered various areas including use of context, principles, defining English language proficiency, classroom management, lesson plan design, as well as teaching methodologies, and philosophy. 

This experience he had has highlighted the importance of training our teachers and promoting improved teaching methods for our students. It has also inspired Ernso to implement new initiatives at our school, such as:

• Grouping students by age category
• Reviewing our curriculum
• Assisting teachers with lesson plans, design, and delivery

Ernso is currently working on a plan to enhance our English program further. Additionally, he intends to join an English association, or start one in Haiti, as none currently exist. Through this association, he aims to promote better EFL teaching practices in Haiti.

Consequently, we are further reaffirmed that the plans we have for our school and the community are crucial for their growth and development. We look forward to what is yet to come and are excited to share this great news with our supporters, friends and families.
