We Are Finally Back to School... and We Love It

By Kelly Martin | CEO

Dear Friends,

After almost 18 months of uncertainty, we are thrilled to report that we are slowly seeing schools returning to the Marine Education Centre for our education programmes! We are also happy to report that our main sponsors, The Sands at Nomads Hotel in Diani, have been able to reinstall their monthly donation. This means we will be closing our Supporting Women in Science project on GlobalGiving at the end of November, as we are now able to support our female team of scientists, reinstalling them to full time. We are incredibly appreciative of you and all our sponsors and will now be able to focus on other programmes!

This is what we got up to in the last period;

  • In August we were visited by two school groups, who joined us at the Marine Education Centre for a half day education programme, we focused on plastic pollution, marine habitats and wildlife. We also visited a school to present an award to a student who had come third place in our Sea Turtle Festival Art Competition.
  • In September, we, with several local organisations, organised a beach clean-up in support of the International Coastal Clean-up on the 18th September. In total, 149 volunteers joined us to clean over 7km of beach, collecting over 100 bags of trash, weighing over 300kg.
  • In October, we provide a tour to a group of college students, as part of our Wazili programme, a Sunday school group also joined us for a tour.
  • In Early-November, a further 2 school groups joined us at the Marine Education Centre.

In total we have received over 150 students at the Marine Education Centre between August and mid-November. Throughout the last period, we continued with our weekly workshops with 4 educators from the Wazili Programme. This is an outreach education programme with several schools and community groups. This is ran in partnership with The Kwale Recycling Centre and funded by Seas4Life, Ekwal and Ocean Recovery Alliance. This programme reaches over 200 participants each week!

For further information on our activities over the last 3 months, please go to: https://ceskenya.org/newsletters-2021/ and check out our bimonthly newsletters. You can also check out our short report on our Wazili programme, jam-packed with pictures of the last module, which focused on Marine Life, to do so, please click here.

Lastly, we would like to say a special thank you to you, for being part of our network of supporters. We are so pleased to finally be able to engage with students again on conservation!

We wish you a relaxing and enjoyable festive period!

Until next time!
