IDEA has started a new project to empower girls and to sensitize and bring about an attitudinal change in young boys & girls towards gender issues by
educating, sensitizing & empowering them. This project engage them in peer education , empower girls by improving their health, education, and imparting
skill based training for enhancing their employability.A brief update on the project :
85 students in class VIII & IX in one of the associated schools attended this program . We partnered with Indian Red
Cross Society for conducting this programs on December 2 as a part of the World Aids Day . The Awareness session covered the following
points:
1) The Causes& reasons of HIV/AIDS
2) Symptoms – types of testing
3) Window period & Treatment.
4) Misconceptions.
There was a question & answer session followed by the above sessions.
As part of the project we run a skill development program for the girls. Here is a success story of Prajakta who has taken the benefit of the program.
Prajakta, a 20 year old girl had left education when she was in school final year due to the financial crisis at home . She started
working as a part time maid servant to contribute towards her family income. She was not happy with the work she was occupied with. During a youth group
meeting, she expressed her desire to join the Bedside Assistant course run by IDEA. She felt as if she had a ray of hope for a better future. We have given her a
‘Second Chance’ by enrolling her under the skill development program.
Initially she found difficulty in grasping the medical terminologies but soon she could cope with her studies. During her
internship too she had a fear about the hospital environment and the Doctors, but with regular interaction and counseling she became very comfortable. She gradually
gained confidence and wants to pursue Nursing as her career. After completing the course she got employment in the same hospital where she has done her internship.
She wishes to join A. N. M (Auxiliary midwife) course and be a registered nurse after a couple of years.
Prajakta is happy that today her family’s life style has improved due to her job. Prajakta is also happy that her
knowledge is enabling her to help young & illiterate mothers in her neighborhood.
