Volunteers provide comfort to Hospice individuals

By Stewart L. Bromberg | Executive Director, Cedar Village Foundation

When Penny K. moved to Cincinnati, Ohio thirty years ago, she knew that she wanted to volunteer in her community.  She took a class to learn about volunteer opportunities and learned about Hospice.  At that time, there were a lot of young people who were in Hospice and Penny knew that she could help make a difference.

It was then that Penny began providing comfort to those at the end of their life.  She sat with them, listened to their stories and became a witness to their experience.  Today, Penny volunteers at Cedar Village Retirement Community in the Hospice Department and she finds the work rewarding.

“At the end of life, hospice is the only way to go.  It is so humane,” said Penny.  “Having respect for those who are dying is very important.”

Recently, Penny brought in her gardening magazines to share with some of the residents she visits.  One of the residents showed interest in the magazine and that was exciting to Penny. Penny believes that everyone is relevant and should be treated that way.

“I love working with everyone and I love the interaction here with people.”
