End of Land: Project Report 01, Summer 2020

By Sara Dosa | Director, End of Land

Thanks to the generous support of our GlobalGiving community, as well as a grant from the International Documentary Association’s Enterprise Fund, our team has been continuing our work to develop END OF LAND. Initially, we had hoped to scout in Yamal to find and build strong relationships with our subjects this summer. We have had to shift our production plans to the global coronavirus pandemic and now hope to carry out this scout in March 2021. COVID-19 has also impacted the Nenets and gas workers everyday lives on the Yamal Peninsula, forcing the Nenets to carve out new migration routes to avoid crossing gas plants that have become viral hotspots as gas workers travel back and forth from their homes. We will continue to track the situation to ensure that our subjects and crew work in the safest possible way.

This temporary production pause, however, has opened up new opportunities for in-depth research and collaboration. We are working with our Russian and Siberian collaborators to learn more about the complexities of life in Yamal, the devastating impacts the climate is having this summer (see a telling article about Siberia's hottest summer on record in the article linked below), as well as the resilience and creativity the people living in Yamal are displaying in the face of such unprecedented challenges. We will look forward to continuing our work with our collaborators, as well as fundraising and sharpening our creative vision for sharing this important story.

Thank you for your support and interest in END OF LAND. We look forward to staying in touch!
