In May 2025, the Omo Valley Research Project hosted a two-day digital skills workshop for university students at the South Omo Research Center in Jinka, Ethiopia. The training focused on essential computing tools, collaborative writing, and resume building—offering both practical knowledge and a strong sense of community.
Full Report:
At the Omo Valley Research Project (OVRP), we believe education must go beyond the classroom. Many of our students are the first in their families—and often in their entire communities—to pursue formal education. To help bridge the digital divide and prepare them for meaningful employment after graduation, we organized a hands-on workshop focused on digital skills.
The two-day training, funded by a generous grant, brought together 13 OVRP-supported university students for instruction in tools such as Google Docs, Google Sheets, and ChatGPT. Students learned the fundamentals of cloud storage, data organization, document formatting, and spreadsheet functions. Importantly, they applied their new skills to create professional resumes, which were then shared with faculty and peers for feedback.
The sessions also tackled practical digital literacy topics, including password management, data security, and backing up files—tools that will serve students throughout their careers. To build confidence, students practiced public speaking in English, which for many is a second or third language.
Beyond the technical content, the workshop fostered lasting peer relationships and a stronger sense of professional identity. As one student shared: “I loved the opportunity to make new friendships that I will carry into the future.”
The event was hosted at the South Omo Research Center with support from Arba Minch University and facilitated by a team of instructors from the University of Mohammed VI Polytechnic, Boston University, Jimma University, and Arba Minch. We’re proud of the enthusiasm, growth, and determination shown by our students and grateful to our supporters for making this event possible.
What’s Next:
With your continued support, we hope to offer more workshops that combine skill-building with mentorship and community support. These events are critical in preparing students to navigate the rapidly changing economic and technological landscape of Ethiopia.
