Empowerment Through Education: Shaping the Future

In many parts of the Omo Valley, a permanent school building is a rarity. Students often learn under mobile shelters that can be moved whenever the community relocates. Despite these obstacles, the Omo Valley Research Project continues to support determined scholars through scholarship funding, mentorship, and academic resources. In 2024, we awarded $15,957 to nine students, with a focus on expanding opportunities for women who have historically been underrepresented in higher education.

Highlighting Our New Awardees

Three new women joined our program this year, bringing exceptional talent, drive, and the aspiration to become role models in their communities:

• One new student began studying natural sciences at a university in Arba Minch. She was among the top graduates at her high school in Jinka and often expresses how the scholarship helps her move closer to a bachelor’s degree.

• Another new recipient enrolled at a university in Jimma, also pursuing natural sciences. She earned one of the highest national entrance exam scores in the South Omo Zone—placing near the top among thousands of test-takers.

• The third new awardee is pursuing a radiology program at a medical college, having overcome challenges as a firstborn in a pastoralist family. Her enthusiasm for radiology is matched by a desire to share her skills in the Omo Valley and help train future healthcare professionals.

Each of these young women is paving the way for future scholars. Their interests range from the sciences to medicine, and they plan to use their studies to uplift communities where many still rely on temporary classrooms.

A Conversation with an Earlier Female Recipient

The OVRP’s commitment to women’s education can be traced to our very first female scholarship recipient. She is currently in her second year of veterinary studies at a university in Jinka. Alongside her coursework, she cares for her child and a young relative. Her dedication to helping local pastoralists improve animal health underscores how an investment in education affects entire families and communities.

Progress and Future Plans

Others in our program continue to make significant progress. One awardee is close to finishing medical training, while another is finalizing a master’s thesis on dairy practices. Their experiences show how graduates, particularly from underrepresented backgrounds, return home ready to create lasting change.

In the coming year, we plan to fund scholarships for two or three additional students, looking especially for qualified candidates from Omo Valley groups not yet represented. We also plan to provide a laptop computer to each new awardee, ensuring that distance or limited resources do not hinder them from excelling academically.
