Progress Report on the Implementation of
CAASE’s Prevention Curricula:
Empowering Young Men to End Sexual Exploitation and
Empowering Young Women to End Sexual Exploitation
May 10, 2017
Spring is here. The trees are budding, the flowers are blooming, and CAASE’s educators are working furiously to facilitate as many workshops as possible before the school year ends. The 2016-2017 school year is turning out to be a record-setting year for the Education Department.
In September, the size of the Education Department doubled when CAASE added a second paid educator to the staff. The investment is already proving to be worthwhile, as CAASE expects to work with over 2,500 students from 15 different schools in the Chicago area. We work with students of all genders, with a particular focus on reaching young men. Our students learned about consent, healthy dating, and how they can be a part of the solution to the problems of gender-based violence and sexual exploitation. These numbers, however, only begin to tell the story. I’ll let the students tell the rest of it.
“From now on I will respect all women and not judge them.”
-- a young man in 11th grade
“I learned how I can be an ally for my friends.”
-- a young woman in 9th grade
“The most important thing I learned was what a healthy relationship really looks like, and now I can inform my friends.”
-- a young woman in 10th grade
“Prostitution is no joke.”
-- a young man in 11th grade
“The most important thing I learned is that it is important to try to see things from a woman’s perspective.”
-- a young man in 12th grade
“The most important thing I can do is to educate all those in my life about what we learned here today. I want everyone to be part of the solution, and not the problem.”
-- a young man in 12th grade
