After making some changes and updates to our signature curriculum, Empowering Young Men in Ending Sexual Exploitation, we've been able to put it to work in classrooms the last few months. We've gotten feedback from school administrators and participants about the revised curriclum, and all feedback has been positive and encouraging. Here are just some student highlights we'd like to share with you:
"I realized how much society has made objectifying women acceptable. We need to stop movies, television shows, YouTube, and social media showing vulgar content when it comes to objectification.”
“Prostitution exists because we have this idea of women as easy to get or that we are objects. It’s the demand for it.”
“I will never encourage people to go to a strip club or buy someone for sex.”
“Now that I have been given these definitions, I too fit into instances where I have dealt with sexual assault without even noticing.”
This is just further evidence as to why this curriculum is needed, and why our young men and boys need to be included in the conversation of prevention. Many youth approach us after workshops to ask for further advice on a specific experience they're dealing with, or thank us for speaking with them like adults on topics that their parents avoid. They're craving answers to these questions, and if knowledge is power, let's empower them to think critically, change their attitudes, and learn new behaviors. We educated 4,000 students in 2018, and we're planning to increase that number in 2019. So far, we're off to a great start. Thank you to everyone who has made that possible through generous gifts!
