One in five women in Nepal aged 15-49 years have experienced physical violence since the age of 15 years and at least one in four ever-married women have ever experienced spousal physical, sexual, or emotional violence. WACN approach to address Gender Based Violence in Nepal impinge on three strands: 1) Building social capital against GBV, 2) Economic empowerment through the livelihoods programs, and 3) Advocacy for policy influencing.
Many individuals are unaware of their rights or how to access support, which means violence often goes unreported. In many regions, women face significant barriers when trying to start or expand their businesses due to limited access to traditional banking systems, lack of collateral, and societal norms that discourage female entrepreneurship. Deeply entrenched patriarchal norms and traditional views often reinforce gender inequality, making GBV seem acceptable or inevitable.
To address GBV, Women Dialogue Groups (WDGs) will be established in different locations. These groups, composed of women and girls from the community, will work collaboratively with a local legal resource person. WDGs aim to build social capital against GBV through two primary avenues:1) Enhancing Awareness and Capacity Building, 2) Providing Accessible Legal Support. To address financial exclusion and limited opportunities for women, we will implement targeted initiatives.
Ending GBV focuses on three key pillars: 1) safeguarding women from violence through the effective enforcement of legal rights, 2) promoting positive social norms, attitudes, and behaviors to prevent violence against women, and 3) advancing women's social and economic empowerment. Strengthening women's entrepreneurship and employment opportunities, improving access to legal services, and enhancing women's bargaining power are essential strategies.
