By Teresa Schwarz and Claire Naughton | HOOP Co-founder and Volunteer
Lucy and her two children have been with HOOP for four years. A natural-born leader, she was elected as the current President to the Board of HOOP Moms, a role which has given her the opportunity to exercise the new skills she learned in our workshops: “I had to learn how to talk in public. Tamara [Social Worker] always encouraged me and Andrés [Program Coordinator] taught me how to use my hands.”
Most recently, Lucy successfully organized the food for the celebration of HOOP’s 5th Anniversary, a task equal parts challenging and important. Largely because of Lucy’s planning and desire to include all of the mothers in the set-up, the event was a huge success; it’s impossible to celebrate HOOP without celebrating our moms, and Lucy ensured that everyone felt included in the event. “I like it when the Moms are participating and united. Together we can do anything.”
Lucy has big plans for the future: “...I would like to have a business and and establish something of my own like I learned at the HOOP Dreambuilder [training for women to establish small businesses]...so I can provide for my children and they can attain a higher education, including English classes, which open a lot of opportunities and have become essential.”
