Dear Supporters,
We are grateful to share another update from Empowering the Future, a partnership between Aura Freedom International and New Light supporting girls and young women at risk of violence and exploitation in Kolkata.
In recent months, project support has continued at both Soma Home and Sonar Tori, providing safe, stable housing and opportunities for girls and young women to build safer and more independent futures. Soma Home supports girls aged 8 to 18, while Sonar Tori provides a safe home for young women aged 18 to 25 who may otherwise face homelessness, exploitation, forced prostitution, or early marriage. For young women at Sonar Tori, this stability is especially important as they continue higher education, professional training, and other pathways toward financial independence.
Growing Through Safety, Education & Opportunity
At both homes, residents continue to receive nutritious meals, healthcare as needed, educational support, mentorship, and opportunities to develop practical and creative skills. Girls at Soma Home continue their formal education and participate in activities including art, dance, sports, computer skills, and life skills. At Sonar Tori, young women are supported to pursue higher education and professional studies while living in a safe and supportive environment.
Trauma-informed emotional and psychosocial support also remains an important part of the project. Counselling, creative expression, physical activity, and strong relationships with caregivers and peers help residents build confidence, connection, and a sense of possibility.
The photos accompanying this update were taken at Sonar Tori, and offer a glimpse into the safe and supportive environment made possible through this project. A recent message from a community partner captures the significance of this work:

Looking Ahead
As Empowering the Future continues, our focus remains on sustaining safe residential care at both homes, supporting education and professional development, and creating pathways toward greater confidence, independence, and wellbeing.
