Project Report
Overview
Horizon Development Foundation (HDF) has successfully implemented the Empowering Refugees with Daily Hot Meals project to support vulnerable Syrian refugee families residing in Urfa, Turkey. The initiative was launched in response to ongoing economic challenges and the devastating effects of the recent earthquake, which significantly increased food insecurity among refugees. Special focus was placed on supporting widows, children, and families without breadwinners—groups identified as being among the most at risk.
Implementation and Results
Through this initiative, HDF provided 50 hot meals per day, reaching approximately 1,100 meals each month for the most vulnerable refugee households. The meals were diverse and nutritious, including items such as rice, cooked vegetables, lamb, chicken, sweets, and yogurt. Each meal was thoughtfully prepared, packaged, and delivered to ensure families received the necessary daily nourishment in a dignified manner.
Impact
Improved Nutritional Intake: The consistent supply of hot meals played a critical role in reducing hunger and ensuring families met their basic dietary needs.
Reduced Financial Burden: By covering a key daily need, the project helped families reallocate their limited income toward other urgent priorities, such as shelter, medical care, and school expenses.
Strengthened Community Support: The regular meal deliveries not only met physical needs but also fostered a sense of solidarity and care, positively influencing the emotional well-being of beneficiaries.
Challenges and Emerging Concerns
While the project has had a substantial positive impact, recent reductions in fundraising have posed a significant challenge. The decrease in donor contributions has affected the project’s sustainability and may lead to a reduction in the number of meals distributed in the coming months. This development risks leaving many vulnerable families without consistent access to food support, especially those with no alternative sources of assistance.
Long-Term Outlook
Despite the financial constraints, HDF remains committed to supporting refugee communities. Efforts are ongoing to identify new funding opportunities and expand partnerships to maintain and potentially scale this initiative. The positive relationship built with the community through this project serves as a strong foundation for future interventions aimed at improving overall well-being and resilience.
