Nearly two years after the 2015 earthquakes hundreds of families are living in dilapidated temporary shelters. Thousands of children are learning in temporary spaces, many of which are open to the harsh Himalayan elements. They do not need to. Even unsafe houses may be salvageable through retrofitting, which is much faster and cheaper than rebuilding from scratch. We want to get families back in safe houses and schools now. On April 25th 2015 a devastating 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal. Subsequent aftershocks, including a 7.3 magnitude earthquake on May 12th 2015, caused even more damage and destruction. As a result of the earthquakes over 8,700 people died and more than 22,300 people were injured. Assessments show that 498,852 private houses were destroyed and another 256,697 partially damaged. In addition, 19,000 classrooms were destroyed and 11,000 damaged. Nearly 3 million people were displaced.
Our project is multi-layered with activities aimed at permanently changing building practices and preventing deaths in future earthquakes. We will strengthen the technical capacity of other agencies via training and resource development; we will increase the disaster preparedness and awareness of affected communities; we will monitor and evaluate building practices; and we will work with the government to develop technical resources and training material to improve technical capacity.
We started our evaluation process early, getting a head start on building assessments and resource development. While we have accomplished much, more desperately needs attention. With the support of generous donors we will be able to continue developing resources and tools to reach the hundreds of thousands of affected families through our innovative approach. These vulnerable families will be empowered not only to rebuild, but also to rebuild safer and protect themselves from future disasters.
