Empowering Mayan women through ancient textiles

Our field team just had their first visit to Mitontic.

Mitontic is very near Chenalho, belongs to the 9 most marginalized municipalities in Los Altos de Chiapas and, ironically, has one of the most stunning scenery between the communities we have visited until now, because the little village is located just below a huge, green and beautiful mountain, really near to the clouds. There we were received by Rosa, an artisan who reach us through Yoli, another artisan from Zinacantan.

Rosa told us that the original Mitontic costume is almost lost, there are a very few old ladies whom still keep it like a treasure, but they do not wear it anymore, instead they wear a copycat outfit from their neighbors in Chenalhó. Rosa said that the copy happened about 20 years ago, so for non local people it is very easy to mistook women from both municipalities. But even it sounds sad that their have been lost their original identity, not everything of those women's past is losted, actually they produce some handicrafted blouses to sell with their tradicional diamond embroidery and some of the symbols used in their previous traditional garments.

Despite their efforts to improve their lives by selling their handicrafts, the income derived from their textiles are scarce and their sales are not enough to cover their expenses and achieve a betterment to their family economy.
That is why Impacto textil offered them to involve them in our training program to improve their technical skills, and next week we will have our first formal meeting to further assess the situation of the group and propose the beginning of the curriculum.

Mitontic, represents a lot of challenges for the organization, not just because it's high rate of marginality and poorness, but because the community is very closed to exterior world and strangers are not so well receive. People show very hermetic. But nevertheless, we are very excited to begin our work with these group, and we hope the rest of the woman in the community get interested in our vision on women empowerment through textiles and artisan labor. Specially, because, our work requires the participation and the full dedication and comprehension of those involved, so we together be able to achieve a betterment into their self confidence, their skills, getting as a result a truly empowerment and an enhancement in their present and future life.

Nuestro equipo de campo acaba de tener su primera visita a Mitontic.

Mitontic está muy cerca de Chenalhó, pertenece a los 9 municipios más marginados en Los Altos de Chiapas, pero, irónicamente, tiene uno de los más impresionantes paisajes entre las comunidades que hemos visitado hasta ahora: el pueblo se encuentra justo debajo de un enorme, verde y hermosa montaña, muy cerca de las nubes. Allí fuimos recibidos por Rosa, una artesana que nos contacto a través de Yoli, otra artesana de Zinacantán.

Rosa nos dijo que el traje original de Mitontic está casi perdido, hay muy pocas ancianas quienes aún lo conservan como un tesoro, pero no lo llevan más, sino que usan un traje que copiaron de sus vecinos de Chenalhó. Rosa dijo que la copia ocurrió hace unos 20 años, por lo que para las personas no locales es muy fácil confundir a las mujeres de ambos municipios. Sin embargo, aunque suena triste el hecho de que estas mujeres han perdido su identidad original, no todo está olvidado, en la actualidad, las mujeres de Mitontic producen algunas blusas para vender, son hechas a mano y tienen el bordado de diamante tradicional y algunos de los símbolos que utilizaban en su traje tradicional anterior.

Sin embargo a pesar de sus esfuerzos por mejorar mediante la venta de sus artesanías, los ingresos derivados de sus textiles son escasos y sus ventas no son suficientes para cubrir sus gastos y lograr un mejoramiento en su economía familiar. Esa es la razón por la que Impacto les ofreció que participen en nuestro programa de capacitación para mejorar sus habilidades técnicas, y la próxima semana tendremos nuestra primera reunión formal para evaluar más a fondo la situación del grupo y proponer el inicio del plan de estudios.

Mitontic, representa grandes desafíos para la organización, no sólo porque está dentro del alto índice de marginalidad y pobreza, sino porque la comunidad está cerrada al contacto con el mundo exterior y los no locales no son tan bien recibidos como en otras comunidades. Las personas se muestran muy herméticas, pero, estamos muy contentas de comenzar nuestro trabajo con este grupo, y esperamos que al resto de las mujeres en la comunidad les interese nuestra visión sobre el empoderamiento de las mujeres a través de los textiles y el trabajo artesanal. Especialmente, porque, nuestro trabajo requiere la participación y la plena dedicación y comprensión de los involucrados, para así, en conjunto, lograr una mejora en su autoestima y sus habilidades, obteniendo como resultado un verdadero empoderamiento y una mejora en su calidad de vida presente y futura.
