Milaan Foundation’s Girl Icon Program is a powerful life skills and leadership initiative that empowers adolescent girls to challenge deeply rooted practices like child marriage and take control of their futures. The program equips girls with critical knowledge and tools to make informed decisions about their education, marriage, and reproductive health, enabling them to stand up against harmful traditions and assert their right to choose their own path.
We are proud to spotlight our Girl Icons, who have shown extraordinary courage in resisting child marriage and advocating for the rights of other girls. A few have gone from being at risk of early marriage to becoming leaders in their villages and thereby educating families, engaging community elders, and sparking conversations that were once taboo. Their advocacy is not just personal; it is a movement that is challenging centuries-old practices and reshaping futures.
She Stood Up, Raised Her Voice and Took Charge: Shalu’s Fight Against Child Marriage
Shalu ( name changed to protect personal identity ), a 16-year-old Girl Icon from Tapnoor Village in Barabanki, proved that courage and determination can create real change. Growing up in a family of eight members, she was once a shy and reserved girl, who did not speak up much, even at home. But everything changed when she joined the Girl Icon program of Milaan Foundation. Through training and mentorship, she found her voice, built confidence, and discovered the strength to stand up for what she believed in.
That strength was tested when Shalu learned that a 16-year-old girl, Anita, was being forced into marriage by her family. Instead of choosing to stay silent, she stepped in. She spoke to Anita’s parents, explaining the dangers of early marriage and the importance of education.
This wasn’t easy, but she didn’t give up. Her persistence paid off—Anita’s wedding was called off, and she was allowed to continue her studies.
Shalu didn’t stop there. When her own uncle tried to arrange a marriage for her cousin, she knew it was time for her to act again. This time, the conversation and the situation were even harder—it was her own family after all. But she gathered her courage and explained the importance of education, perils of child marriage , and its impact on her cousin’s life. Her words resonated with the family. The cousin’s wedding was cancelled, and she went back to school.
Thanks to Shalu’s bravery, these two girls now have the chance to shape their own futures. Her journey shows that one voice, no matter how young, can make a difference. She is not just a leader; she is an inspiration to her community, proving that change begins when we choose to speak up.
Shivani’s Mission to End Child Marriage
Shivani’s (name changed to protect personal identity) story is one of transformation, courage, and unwavering determination. Once a quiet and self-doubting individual, Shivani emerged as a confident leader and a strong voice against social injustice, thanks to her involvement with the Milaan Foundation’s Girl Icon Program. Her journey reflects not only personal growth but also her deep commitment to empowering others, especially in the fight to end child marriage.
Before joining Milaan, Shivani found it difficult to speak in front of others. Despite her mother’s constant encouragement to be vocal and expressive, she often felt held back by fear and self-doubt. Coming from a family of seven, Shivani was fortunate to have strong support from her parents. Her father, a hardworking farmer, and her mother, a dedicated homemaker, always believed in her potential. Shivani’s dream of clearing the UPSC exam and making a meaningful impact on society remained a driving force behind her actions.
Shivani first heard about the Milaan Foundation through the Centre where she attended coaching classes. Encouraged by her teacher, she applied for the Girl Icon Program and got selected. Initially, joining Milaan was a daunting experience for Shivani. She was unsure of what to expect and hesitant about engaging with so many new people. However, as she attended training sessions, her confidence grew. She began learning to communicate effectively, to differentiate between right and wrong, and to speak out against injustice.
A turning point in Shivani’s life was when her family proposed her younger sister’s early marriage. Recognizing this as a clear case of child marriage, Shivani took a firm stand. She explained the legal implications and ethical concerns to her parents, who then agreed to postpone the marriage. Through her actions, she not only protected her sister but also played a key role in preventing three other child marriages in her village, working alongside a community leader. This became one of the most powerful contributions she made to her community.
Shivani gained recognition in her village as a leader and change-maker. The scholarship she received allowed her to continue her education, and she successfully completed courses in digital and financial literacy. Today, she works as a project assistant with Milaan while continuing to pursue her UPSC aspirations with renewed confidence and purpose.
