Two of our Girl Icons from the 2024-2025 cohort have taken a powerful stand against child marriage, committing to lead change and protect the rights of girls in their community. Their dedication and courage in challenging deeply entrenched societal norms have made them strong advocates for a future where every girl has the freedom to make her own choices.
A Voice for Change: Shazia’s Stand Against Child Marriage
Shazia (name changed to protect Identity), a 15-year-old Class X student, first heard about Milaan’s Girl Icon program when a representative visited her school. Inspired by stories of young women leading change in their communities, she knew she wanted to become a Girl Icon. After successfully passing the selection process, Shazia embraced her role and gained valuable insights into critical issues affecting her community.
Her resolve was tested when she learned her teenage cousin was about to be married off. Despite the inevitability of the marriage, Shazia approached her aunt and uncle, patiently explaining the harmful consequences of child marriage. Drawing from her Girl Icon experience, she highlighted the importance of education and how it could transform her cousin’s future.
Shazia's persistence convinced her relatives to delay the marriage and allow her cousin to join the Girl Icon program. Now, she continues to mentor her cousin and is committed to empowering girls in her community, helping them pursue their dreams and take control of their futures.
Courage in Action: Priya's Fight Against Child Marriage
Priya Singh (name changed to protect Identity), a 14-year-old Girl Icon from Jaunpur, exemplifies the power of self-belief to create change. Her determination has protected the futures of young girls in her community.
In a society where traditions often overshadow individual rights, Priya intervened to stop two child marriages. Her journey began when she met Ritu (name changed to protect Identity) a 16-year-old girl whose parents were forcing her into marriage. Priya gathered her friends and approached Ritu's parents, urging them to respect their daughter's wishes. Despite facing threats, Priya stood firm in her belief that girls deserve freedom.
On her second visit, Priya introduced herself as a Girl Icon and explained the program's mission. With support from her project assistant and the Milaan team, she persuaded Ritu's parents to cancel the marriage, gaining community support in the process.
Empowered by this success, Priya then focused on Neelam ( name changed to protect her identity.), a girl facing an unwanted marriage due to her family's financial struggles. A ninth-grade dropout, Neelam wanted to continue her education. Priya and her Sathi leaders encouraged Neelam to assert her rights and provided her with the Women’s Helpline number.
After contacting the helpline, police intervened and stopped the illegal marriage. Realizing their mistake, Neelam's parents pledged to support her education.
Through her actions, Priya Singh has become a symbol of hope, showing that one person's courage can inspire meaningful change in the community.
