Milaan’s Girl Icon Program, implemented by Milaan Foundation, is a comprehensive life skills program that empowers adolescent girls to realize their full potential and make informed decisions about their education, marriage, and reproductive health.Through a combination of curriculum-based training, community engagement, leadership development, and role-modeling, the Girl Icon Program aims to transform not only the individual lives of girls but also build community perceptions towards gender equity, creating an enabling environment for girls to realize their full potential.
In the 8 years of the Program, we have worked with over 50,000 adolescent girls, across 3 states of India - Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka. And current;ly works with another 50000 plus girls under the same programme.
We are proud to highlight Girl Icons from our recent cohort who, just months after finishing the program, have already demonstrated significant impacts in their communities. These adolescent girls have not only pursued higher education and career opportunities but have also become mentors and role models for other girls in their villages. Their efforts in advocating for girls' education and rights have started to shift mindsets and create a ripple effect of positive change. By breaking barriers and setting new standards, they are helping to build a more equitable and just society for future generations.
Empowering Dreams: A Journey of Selflessness and Determination
Anita (name changed to protect identity) is a Girl Icon from 2022 Batch from a Small village named Macchri, nestled in Meerut,. Her father worked in a factory, while her mother tended to their home. Anita had two younger brothers and a sister on the brink of marriage.
Despite their financial struggles, Anita was a beacon of responsibility and dedication. After scoring 65% in her 12th-grade exams, she held tight to her dreams of education being her pathway to a brighter future.
As a Girl Icon Anita aimed at empowering girls to become leaders. Through this, she met Riya (name changed to protect identity), a peer member of her group who, like Anita, yearned to study further but had to drop out of school due to money woes.
Anita was deeply moved by Riya's plight. Determined to make a difference, she worked with the local administration to ensure that Riya got re-admitted to a government school, keeping the flame of education alive for her friend.
Upon completing the Girl Icon program, Anita received a scholarship for her unwavering commitment. Instead of keeping it all for herself, she decided to spread the goodness.
With half the scholarship, Anita made sure Riya not only attended a top-notch private school but also had all the essential books and a uniform. The remaining half, Anita kept for her own dreams, knowing she deserved it too.
Anita's selflessness changed Riya's life. Together, they proved that with determination and kindness, one can make miracles happen. They learned that true joy lies in lifting others up and making their dreams soar.
Journey of Resilience: A Testament to Determination and Empowerment
In the Jhabua block, we encounter 14 remarkable young women who serve as Girl Icons, symbolizing resilience, determination, and hope. One such inspiring figure is Priya (name changed to protect identity), whose journey is a testament to her unwavering grit and determination.
Priya comes from a humble background, living with her parents, two sisters, and three brothers in a close-knit family. Her father toils as a farmer while her mother manages the household. Priya recalls a challenging phase in her childhood when frequent illnesses left her frail and unable to walk. She describes this period as a haunting nightmare, shaking her confidence and casting doubts on her future prospects.
However, destiny had other plans for Priya. Her life took a transformative turn when she was selected for Milaan’s Girl Icon Program, a moment she fondly describes as a dream come true. Inspired by her cousin sister, Preeti (name changed to protect identity) Priya witnessed firsthand the power of education and empowerment. She looked up to Preeti, admiring her progress and the positive impact she had on her family.
Engaging with Milaan, Priya rediscovered herself. Through various activities and interactions, she gained insights into her strengths and weaknesses. More importantly, she realized her aspirations went beyond societal expectations. Instead of succumbing to early marriage, Priya aspires to prioritize her career and personal growth.
Supporting her every step of the way is her resilient father, a pillar of strength who constantly advocates for her dreams. Despite facing societal pressures and naysayers, Priya feels empowered and confident, ready to soar to new heights. With the backing of her parents and the support of the alumni network, she is determined to pursue her education and carve out a brighter future for herself.
In Priya's story, we find a compelling narrative of perseverance, self-discovery, and the transformative power of education and empowerment. Her journey serves as an inspiration, not just for the young girls of Jhabua but for anyone facing adversities and striving to break free from societal constraints.
