Summary

Since 2020, the Montessori Global Growth Fund has supported grassroots, community-initiated education programs in under-resourced settings across the United States and worldwide by providing small grants for teacher training, classroom materials, and critical infrastructure projects (e.g., toilets). Each program is initiated and sustained by determined individuals and families who draw from strengths in their local community to address education gaps using Montessori education.

Challenge

More than 250 Million children and youth remain out of school worldwide (UNESCO, 2024), despite decades of progress. For most of these children, education is inaccessible due to cost, distance, discrimination, or disability--with children in low-income countries and remote regions affected the most. Our mission is to change this statistic from the ground up--countering lack of trained teachers, school resources, and accessible schools by investing in local communities.

Solution

This project will provide 4-6 grants for teacher training, classroom materials, and infrastructure projects to community-initiated Montessori schools. These will enable under-resourced communities to improve education access and quality for children and youth in sustainable ways. Our grants enable schools to send locals to earn formal teaching certificates and to acquire necessary materials for learning that will be used to teach children critical and advanced academic skills for decades.

Long-Term Impact

Each grant will help an estimated 20-40 children per year to access holistic education over the course of 10-20 years, impacting the lives of thousands of children over the next few decades. In addition, more women will be gainfully employed, and more families will be served by programs that educate parents about child development, learning, and growth. Since 2020, MGGF has supported the successful completion of more than 35 community-rooted projects, changing the lives of countless children.
