COVID-19 has been devastating to poor families across the globe, including in Kenya.
At Hekima Place, our girls are blessed with nutritious food, clean clothes, and warm beds. If they get sick, they will have access to medical care and everything they need to heal. Tragically, members of our community in Kenya- those who live right outside of our own gates- are not this fortunate. Many families are already living in poverty and COVID-19 exacerbates their hardships through the loss of jobs, scarcity of food, and the illness itself. While much aid is going to the slums, little is being done to help more rural households whose poverty goes unnoticed.
In June, Hekima Place provided support to our greater community by distributing a basket of goods to those who need it most. This basket included basic food items, like beans and rice, and basic sanitary items, like soap. It helped poor individuals and families through these hard days and was a gesture to show that they are not alone.
Giving this gift to our community was a gift to our girls too. It helped demonstrate love in action and taught them how important it is for us to support our community, especially in times of crisis. This crisis has been hard on all of us, and at the same time it’s important that we as adults model behavior for our children. Our girls look to us to learn how to treat each other, and this summer they learned kindness.
Thank you for your own kindness. It matters.
