Girls in Kenya face challenges and discrimination just for being born daughters and not sons. A girl’s education is less likely to be valued, and she’s more likely not to finish school. She may be married off, sent to work or trafficked. Without an education, she’ll live in poverty for the rest of her life, and her children will face the same hardships.
But an education changes her future. She’ll stay safer, make her own decisions, and grow up to lead an empowered life.
We understand the importance of education for girls- and for all children. In 2020 we are opening Hekima Hills Learning Center. On January 7, 2020 nine of our girls and many children from the community will enter our school and begin receiving an education that they may have never had.
All our girls will benefit from education including our newest Hekima girl, Janice, who was just placed under our care and protection. At 11 years old, Janice has faced more trauma and disruption in her young life than most of us can even imagine. Coming from a background of abuse, she is slow to trust. She’s still adjusting to a new school, a new home, and a new routine. She struggles with loneliness and isolation.
While each girl is unique, we’ve seen girls like Janice before. We know that healing takes time, and we know how to help her come to love herself and trust again. When she begins to see herself as we see her- as a beautiful, intelligent child full of potential and love- she’ll begin to trust. She’ll begin to pay attention in school, play with her sisters, and make new friends. We know that day is just around the corner.
With your help, we can rescue and educate girls like Janice- girls who may not otherwise have the chance to grow up in a safe loving home and get an education to empower their futures. Together, we reach the most vulnerable children, those left behind by parents and in need of protection and education. Your gift provides funding for programs that support our girls today with education, food, clothes, medical care and counseling while fostering their long-term potential. Through your prayers and financial support, we will continue to protect, care for and educate every girl that comes to our doors.
Your gift helps take care of Janice and her Hekima sisters. Thank you for caring for them and for being a part of our Hekima family. Your support makes a difference.
